Brochure - Nana Thurs.

Hey, this is Nana from Thursday's class.
I made the suggested changes and worked on the type.
Let me know if there is anything that you notice that should be brought to my attention!

Thanks :)

Typographer Pamphlet

Made the suggested changes
Please tell me if anything else isn't working

thanks!
Michelle

I fell like the alignment of the title face of all the faces is off
it is aligned with the bottom of type designer because when it was aligned with patrick griffin, further up there was too much negative space between the title and body copy

update:
i don't know maybe not

Christian Wednesday

I re-did my poster to the top one. The bottom one wasn't the right size, and was too dependent on typography and the assignment stated otherwise. Any feedback would be great. Should I print out the top one since its closer to the actual assignment?

Goldilocks and the Three Bears part II

Eddy here, this is my redo of the story. I won't explain it just yet since I want to see if you guys understand the design first so please let me know.

Visual Music

PINOCCHIO

This is very last minute but i'm still hammering out the details on my posters and i need some feed back on them still. The one on the left is what i started and i evolved it to the one on the right, the point is to have the nose come down but have the viewer also recognize that it's a tree. I've been told adding some leaves to the type and to the bottom of where the green falls will help to make it look like a better tree. is there any other things i should do to make the character look like a tree and still have it as a person with a long nose?

Jessica Wednesday Class

Is there anything I should change? Three rows representing the three different things that happen in the story. She never likes the first 2 and always chooses the 3rd. Makes sense?

Tim Min - The Pied Piper of Hamelin

Here's the second version.

And here's the story:

In 1284, while the town of Hamelin was suffering from a rat infestation, a man dressed in pied clothing appeared, claiming to be a rat-catcher. He promised the townsmen a solution for their problem with the rats. The townsmen in turn promised to pay him for the removal of the rats. The man accepted, and played a musical pipe to lure the rats with a song into the Weser River, where all of them drowned. Despite his success, the people reneged on their promise and refused to pay the rat-catcher. The man left the town angrily, but vowed to return some time later, seeking revenge.

On Saint John and Paul's day while the inhabitants were in church, he played his pipe yet again, this time attracting the children of Hamelin. One hundred and thirty boys and girls followed him out of the town, where they were lured into a cave and never seen again. (in other versions of the story, the kids drowned too)

Christian Wednesday Story Poster

I used the story of the Boy who Cried Wolf, and played with the fact that he fake calls it twice, and actually gets eaten the third time.

-Christian

Final Project (Story/Poem)

I know that we are suppose to stay within the guideline of either a story or poem, but this is a quote that I have always liked and I thought it would be nice to give it a visual look. I don't know if this will work out since it is stepping outside of the guideline, but I'll give it a shot anyways.

"We are not enemies, but friends,
  we must not be enemies.
  Though passion may have strained,
it must not break our bonds of affection.
The mystic cords of memory will swell
when again touched as surely they will
be by the better angels of our nature."

-Abraham Lincoln

This is a rough idea so far.

Jessica Wednesday Class Goldilocks & Three Bears

A useful tale for teaching respect for other's property, privacy, manners, obedience, and staying out of strange places. I illustrated an open door and a broken golden lock (goldilocks). The poster is obviously isn't done, any suggestions on what direction I should take this in? Thanks. -Jess

Summary of The Alchemist

HI, I am Yesul Kim, Thursday class.

This is the summary of "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho for my last assignment.  (http://www.wikisummaries.org/The_Alchemist)

The Alchemist

The Alchemist Summary

From WikiSummaries: Free Book Summaries

When Santiago, a young shepherd boy from the Spanish countryside of Andalusia , has a dream that reveals the location of a hidden treasure buried at the Egyptian Pyramids his simple life is suddenly torn in two. Part of him wants to take the chance to go searching for it and the other part of him wants to continue his easy life as a shepherd.

A mysterious king named the king of Salem in Tarifa convinces Santiago that he has succeeded in discovering his Personal Legend. The old king tells Santiago that following his Personal Legend to its conclusion is a person’s only real obligation in life.
Santiago listens to his heart and decides to go on a dangerous search for the treasure. He sells his flock of sheep and heads to Africa, where he is quickly robbed of all his gold and left despondent on the streets. He decides that he was foolish to believe in his dreams and quickly gets a job with a crystal merchant in order to save up enough money to go back home.
After almost a year working for the merchant, Santiago has made a success of the shop and has plenty of money to do whatever he wants. As he’s walking the streets to go back home he suddenly decides to take a chance and continue his search for the buried treasure.
He joins a caravan to make the dangerous crossing across the desert and as he rides the long, slow days away he begins to listen to his heart and to the desert. He begins to understand what the Soul of the World is, and how he fits in.
When the caravan makes it to the oasis, Santiago meets a girl he falls in love with the moment he sees her. The local alchemist, a mysterious man who reminds Santiago of the old king, helps Santiago continue his journey across the desert and teaches him more important life lessons along the way. Although Santiago does not know it, he is becoming wise, and a master in the art of living to the fullest no matter what. Although he has left his true love back at the oasis, he is resolved to follow his dream to its end.
After many adventures, dangers, and important life lessons Santiago finally reaches the Pyramids. His joy at finally being at journey’s end overwhelms him, and he is grateful that he got the chance to follow his dream.
He begins to dig deep into the sand looking for treasure, but before he can get far a pack of thieves shows up, beating and robbing him. They force him to continue digging, and then leave when no treasure is found. One of the thieves, as destiny would have it, tells Santiago an important clue and when they’re gone Santiago can’t help but laugh, because now he knows where his treasure truly lies.
It ends up being right back where his journey began, under the very tree where he had the prophetic dream years before. He digs and finds a beautiful chest full of gold and gems. His next and last journey will be back to the desert to be reunited with the woman he loves.

Rebecca Wed. Class: Poster help!

I decided to change my story to something more recognizable. I was afraid no one would understand the concept of "Stoping By Woods On A Snowy Evening" because it isn't popular.

Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the king's horses,

And all the king's men,

Couldn't put Humpty together again.

I found some interesting things about the story of Humpty Dumpty. I know the character of Humpty Dumpty is always portrayed as an egg because of the fragileness of his character in the poem. As I was researching the poem, I found out the origin might have been a large cannon because of the time period (Used during the English Civil War).

FROM INTERNET:

The History and Origins of the Rhyme
Humpty Dumpty was in fact believed to be a large cannon!  It was used during the English Civil War ( 1642 - 1649) in the Siege of Colchester (13 Jun 1648 - 27 Aug 1648). Colchester was strongly fortified by the Royalists and was laid to siege by the Parliamentarians (Roundheads). In 1648 the town of Colchester  was a walled town with a castle and several churches and was protected by the city wall. Standing immediately adjacent the city wall, was St Mary's Church. A huge cannon, colloquially called Humpty Dumpty, was strategically placed on the wall next to St Mary's Church. The historical events detailing the siege of Colchester are well documented - references to the cannon.

My concept would be war. A country falling apart and then having to put it back together.... Let me know if there is any other meanings that anyone knows about.

Jessica Ziccardi's New Story

The Story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Goldilocks.  She  went for a walk in the forest.  Pretty soon, she came upon a house.  She knocked and, when no one answered, she walked right in. At the table in the kitchen, there were three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks was hungry.  She tasted the porridge from the first bowl. "This porridge is too hot!" she exclaimed. So, she tasted the porridge from the second bowl. "This porridge is too cold," she said. So, she tasted the last bowl of porridge. "Ahhh, this porridge is just right," she said happily and she ate it all up. After she'd eaten the three bears' breakfasts she decided she was feeling a little tired.  So, she walked into the living room where she saw three chairs. Goldilocks sat in the first chair to rest her feet. "This chair is too big!" she exclaimed. So she sat in the second chair. "This chair is too big, too!"  she whined. So she tried the last and smallest chair. "Ahhh, this chair is just right," she sighed.  But just as she settled down into the chair to rest, it broke into pieces! Goldilocks was very tired by this time, so she went upstairs to the bedroom.  She lay down in the first bed, but it was too hard. Then she lay in the second bed, but it was too soft. Then she lay down in the third bed and it was just right.  Goldilocks fell asleep. As she was sleeping, the three bears came home. "Someone's been eating my porridge," growled the Papa bear. "Someone's been eating my porridge," said the Mama bear. "Someone's been eating my porridge and they ate it all up!" cried the Baby bear. "Someone's been sitting in my chair," growled the Papa bear. "Someone's been sitting in my chair," said the Mama bear. "Someone's been sitting in my chair and they've broken it all to pieces," cried the Baby bear. They decided to look around
some more and when they got upstairs to the bedroom, Papa bear growled, "Someone's been sleeping in my bed," "Someone's been sleeping in my bed, too" said the Mama bear. "Someone's been sleeping in my bed and she's still there!" exclaimed Baby bear. Just then, Goldilocks woke up and saw the three bears.  She screamed, "Help!"  And she jumped up and ran out of the room.  Goldilocks ran down the stairs, opened the door, and ran away into the forest.  And she never returned to the home of the three bears.

Michelle Thursday Class; The Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs
This is a story of three pigs, brothers sent out by their mother to "find their fortune". So the three pigs went out to build their own homes and live on their own. One pig quickly built their home out of straw, another pig quickly made their home out of sticks, the last pig dedicated time and hark work into building his home out of bricks. The pig who spent all his time building his home was mocked by his brothers who were out galavanting. Then a big bad wolf came and saw the house made of straw so he huffed and puffed and blew the house down. So that pig ran to his brothers home made of sticks. The wolf then went to the home made of sticks and huffed and puffed and blew the house down. So those two pigs ran to their brother that they made fun of for spending all his time building a sturdy home of brick. The kind brother let his siblings into his brick home. The three pigs out smarted the wolf and tricked him to come down the fire place where there was a pot of boiling water. Then the pigs ate the wolf for dinner.
The End.

Rebecca Wed class... story for poster

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sounds the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

SUMMARY/COMMENTARY:
Like the woods it describes, the poem is lovely but entices us with dark depths of interpretation, in this case. It stands alone and beautiful, the account of a man stopping by woods on a snowy evening, but gives us a come-hither look that begs us to load it with a full inventory of possible meanings. We protest, we make apologies, we point to the dangers of reading poetry in this way, but unlike the speaker of the poem, we cannot resist. Part of what is irrational about the woods is their attraction. They are restful, seductive, lovely, dark, and deep like deep sleep, like oblivion. Snow falls in downy flakes, like a blanket to lie under and be covered by. And here is where many readers hear dark undertones to this lyric. To rest too long while snow falls could be to lose one’s way, to lose the path, to freeze and die.

Elizabeth Reay - Fairy Tale Summary

The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen

This summary's a bit long but I think it explains it nicely:

The Little Mermaid lives far out to sea with her sea-king father, her grandmother, and her older sisters. Eventually the Little Mermaid becomes of age to visit the surface and falls in love with a human prince she sees. She saves him from drowning in a ship wreck and brings him to a nearby shore in front of a temple, where he is found by a temple maiden. After this, the Little Mermaid asks her grandmother about humans. She responds that humans have a much shorter life than the merfolks' 300 year lifespan. However, humans have an eternal soul that goes up to Heaven after they die, whereas merfolk turn into sea foam and cease to exist. Soon, the Little Mermaid goes to the Sea Witch in order to be with the Prince. The Sea Witch says if she is able to win the Prince's love, she will gain an eternal soul. The sea witch agrees to make her a potion that will turn her fins into legs, but every step will feel like she is walking on sharp swords and her feet will bleed terribly. Additionally, if the Prince marries another, the morning after his wedding, she will die and turn into sea foam. The price for the potion is the Little Mermaid's tongue, because she has the most intoxicating voice in the sea realm. The Little Mermaid agrees and the Sea Witch gives her the potion. She goes to the Prince's palace and drinks the potion and wakes up a human. The Prince takes her in and is quite fond of her and she is happy with him despite every step feeling like she is being cut by sharp swords. Eventually, the Prince must marry a princess from a neighboring kingdom. Though he and the Little Mermaid both think he would not marry a stranger, the princess is revealed to be the girl from the temple who discovered him on the shore after the Little Mermaid rescued him and left him there. The Prince is thrilled to see her, believing her to be the one who rescued him. The two are married immediately, and they board a ship home. On the ship, the Little Mermaid realizes that this is her last night on earth and remembers with sorrow all that she had given up for the Prince. Her sisters then appear and they tell her that they have sold their hair to the Sea Witch in exchange for a magic knife. If she kills the Prince with it, she will become a mermaid again. The Little Mermaid cannot bring herself to do so, and throws herself over the deck, prepared to die. However, because of her self sacrifice, she does not die and instead she becomes a "Daughter of the Air." Another Daughter of the Air tells her that she will gain an eternal soul through 300 years worth of good deeds. When a child is bad, the Daughters of the Air shed tears, for each tear a day is added to their time on earth, but when a child is good, a Daughter of the Air smiles, and a year is taken off from her time on earth, and will eventually go to heaven.

Elisa's Story- The Boy Who Cried Wolf

There was once a shepherd-boy who kept his flock at a little distance from the village. Once he thought he would play a trick on the villagers and have some fun at their expense. So he ran toward the village crying out, with all his might,--
"Wolf! Wolf! Come and help! The wolves are at my lambs!"
The kind villagers left their work and ran to the field to help him. But when they got there the boy laughed at them for their pains; there was no wolf there.
Still another day the boy tried the same trick, and the villagers came running to help and got laughed at again. Then one day a wolf did break into the fold and began killing the lambs. In great fright, the boy ran for help. "Wolf! Wolf!" he screamed. "There is a wolf in the flock! Help!"
The villagers heard him, but they thought it was another mean trick; no one paid the least attention, or went near him. And the shepherd-boy lost all his sheep.

That is the kind of thing that can happen to liars: even when they tell the truth no one believes them.

Elisa from Wednesday Class

Hi guys, here are some designs I am thinking about for the belly band of my cover. My book is actually a box that opens like a book and the book cloth is navy blue, and my belly band is going to be the off white color like my paper is inside. Please check these designs out for me and help me decide what direction to go in. thank you!

This is the start of my pop-up brochure for James Montalbano, just to show some progression.

Christian: Wednesday class

Miles Newlyn-Typograher

Yesul Kim -Thursday class

(Here is some information about my Typographer)

Miles Newlyn

While at Central St. Martins School of Art in spring 1991, Miles Newlyn began drawing a few incredibly complex letterforms based on a synthesis of the beautiful medieval lines found in Gothic decoration, and OCRA. The incongruous combination was to be the foundation of a typeface designed to challenge the modular contructivist fonts and the cut & paste typography of the time, a result of designers getting to grips with the Apple Mac. The letterforms were developed into a typeface named Missionary, a testament to bezier virtuosity. As a typeface it was as difficult to categorize as it was to use, almost a narrative in it's own visual language, a story about influence and time, craft and technology.

Although Missionary took almost one thousand hours to complete, Newlyn learned the finer points of bezier curves, and how to effectively get the shapes out of his mind and on to the screen. Due to its complexity, which pushed the limits of the technology, Missionary was originally released in both Postscript Type 1 and EPS formats. But as the hardware improved, the EPS format was dropped. So, although the font has an quasi-ancient aesthetic, it was designed to push the capabilities of the technology. Just as new technologically inspired fonts were low-res bitmaps in 1985, Missionary revealed the new opportunities of hi-res in 1991.

By spending a thousand hours on his first commercial release, Newlyn gained an appreciation for the time needed for refinement, as well as a degree of insanity; time and insanity that is excluded from all but the most sympathetic client jobs. At this point he was fortunate to have low overhead, which allowed his ideas time to germinate, unconstrained by commercial pressures.

The next typeface Newlyn released by Emigre was Democratica. It quickly became the friendly cousin to another Emigre font, Mason, designed by the virtuoso typographer and man with a message, Jon Barnbrook. Newlyn had met Barnbrook at Central St. Martins School of Art, who had been a major influence on Newlyn's work, encouraging the exploration of black letter and gothic type forms. Democratica's rise to widespread use deepened Newlyn's faith in the design community, and gave him the confidence to aim at pleasing his own mind and heart, rather than designing for a market, a trap that many of the larger foundries have fallen into.

Soon thereafter, designing logotypes and custom typefaces for specific clients became the majority of Newlyn's work, teaming up with London design agencies Wolff Olins and BamberForsyth. Newlyn describes a design program of "lite happiness" that characterised many end of the Millennium branding jobs: "Capitalism is utilising branding for the purpose of providing optimism in the wake of continuing bad news; corruption in political and financial circles, global climatic changes, shocking crimes committed by children - the dreadfully bleak picture painted by a 24/7 global news culture in general. As such, it's providing an escape from reality in the form of consumption and retail therapy. An escapist, infantilized and anti-intellectual blanket is being created for a powerless, bewildered and frustrated market. It's a design program of 'lite happiness,' a warm, soft and friendly quality with immediate appeal."

Miles Newlyn currently works as a type designer and owner of the type foundry x&y. His clients include Wolff Olins, Coley Porter Bell, BamberForsyth, Enterprise IG, Grey, Saatchi & Saatchi.

And here are some idea sketch for the Brochure

These were what I was going to show to you for last class but I wasn't feel well so I am posting here. I will make some samples for this week, and for the visual book I would like to make it after I hear from you.
