......................

Untitled Type is the work of SVA graphic design students Alex Merto, Chet Purtilar, Jaime Cartagena, Karishma Sheth, Mark Chang, Mika Osborn and Rigel Ferrin. They are members of Richard Mehl's senior portfolio class, where the work was developed.

These artists share a belief in the formal beauty of letterforms. The pieces in this show are about typography without traditional function or purpose.

The inspirations for the letterforms came from real and imagined sources, including bodega signs, sound waves, craft shops, Roman and Arabic characters, outlaw art, geometry, transparency and unpredictability. Materials and techniques range from conventional (drawing and painting on canvas, plywood, and plexi) to menacing (hammer and chisel on discarded Ikea shelves).

For more information about the artists and their work, contact richard@rmehl.com.

Join us at 'sNice to celebrate Untitled Type, Thursday, March 19, from 8–10 pm.
