Textbook. STEP 2.

Hi everybody,

I did explain it in class, but I want to make sure that we are on the same page.

We are designing a visual book of texts. As we discovered in our previous class, the word "text" means different things to different people and that is exactly the point of this assignment.

  1. After you decided what direction you go (text as a pages from the Illuminated manuscript, texts for the charts, texts as justified block, text as a document, text as image, text as form, text as pure information: Yellow Pages, show bills, nutrition facts, text as a movement, text as a handwritten structure, type as a dialogue between columns and spaces between, and so on)  you needed to continue your search specifically for your topic and add much more examples (the more you collect, the better for you). Picture Collection, SVA library,  is a very good source of texts. Books on History of Typography. You are free to mix texts of different time periods as long as they belong to the direction you've chosen.
  2. Then, you need to arrange your materials in the structure of an accordion book: 25 pages (not spreads) plus endpapers, one title page and introductory page with a paragraph or two of the description of your project, and  page numbers.
  3. Cover of the book with the title "Textbook" and subtitle that should give a sense of your direction. A Cover can be just typographical or image and type to invite you into your the book
  4. You need to bring in class only b/w version of your book for now, but your need to print  a few pages to show us what color solution you will have for the entire book and the cover. There is no color limitation, but 1 or 2 colors are preferable.
  5. When designing your book, think about the dynamics relationships between repeated elements that stabilize your system (A) and constantly changing elements that try to destabilize of your system (BDEKNF....Z). Your stabilizers could be color, a typeface for the page ##, and other repeated textual elements of your choice. Visual music project can be very helpful in art directing your structure. You are creating an "interesting  movie" full of smooth transitions and surprises, unpredictable turns and special effects, based on major principles of design attached.
Have fun!

Olga
